Easter Holiday Fun

Chloe and Jamie came to stay and the first adventure was to Jakes Playbarn, just down the road.  They had great fun on the giant three lane slide, ball pond, soft play area and mini football.

Early next morning we set off to Go Ape with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.  It was a dry day but cold with blue sky.  The Treetop Challenge + lived up to its name.  It is not for the faint hearted.  A great experience which definitely challenged them.  Well done.  Tree-mendous.

The next challenge was Coral Reef with its volcano, snakes, rapids, outdoor pool, rocks and five amazing slides.  The pool is designed to be like visiting a shipwreck on a tropical island.  Jamie and Chloe did three flumes and lots of swimming during our session.  The cannon ride was described as "awesome".  They loved it..

And we really loved our day out to Legoland.  The rides are great.  Flight of the Sky Lion and the Haunted Monster House are soooo good!

Caroline treated us to the reserve and ride passes, which I definitely recommend, otherwise I don't think we would have enjoyed ourselves half as much.

We enjoyed a picnic overlooking Mini Land with all the miniature cities from around the world - all amazing recreations.

An excellent day out Jamie and Chloe had the best time.  We arrived when the park opened at 10 and stayed 'til closing at six making the most of every second!

Back home in Bournemouth Easter Sunday began bright and sunny.  There's nothing quite like lunch in the sun.  We were all  in a good mood.  Fancy a little tipple in the sunshine.  Go on, you deserve it.

Caroline's garden was the perfect spot.  A sunny cushioned seating area, lots of garden for the children to play, lots of easter eggs to find, delicious food, champagne, lamb and Chocolate Block.  Perfect.

Dust off your thermals and slap on your salopettes

Its March so it's time to return to Selva in the Dolomites for our annual silver skiers holiday.  We have swapped our bus passes for lift passes.   I started skiing over 60 years ago!  That was before safety bindings, buckle boots, waterproof GORE-TEX fabrics and ski helmets.  All skis were made of wood.  No Metal or fibreglass.  There was no such thing as snowmaking or the grooming of ski slopes.  I will have to get over my advancing age and get on with it.

It's another glorious day in the Dolomites.  From beginning to end, the hotel Continental was fab.  The rooms were very comfortable, the food top-notch and the lift would take you conveniently down to the ski room to get kitted up before hitting the slopes.

I joined ski school with my friends Pauline and Shona and our instructor, Arnold, was a suntanned wizard of the slopes.  Amazingly enough, under his tutelage I transformed from apprehensive to black runs within a couple of days.  Ending each lesson in a state of exhaustion and exhilaration.  My concession to age - calling it quits after the lesson.  I ski for the ambience, the mountain air, to step out of a lift and see the view.  It's taken me to the top - all I need to do now is get down and following Arnold and the other members of our group (younger than us, of course) was amazing fun.  (Our instructor Arnold Senoner came 6th in the Giant Slalom in Adelboden in 1976).

One of  the reasons we return to the Dolomites year after year is the amazing scenery.  It genuinely is jaw-dropping, and for this trip we were blessed with great weather to enjoy each and every view.

The "boys" skied  without us but back in the hotel each evening over a glass of wine we heard about their adventures.

Cheeky bar stools:-

And have you heard the legend of the German Bierstiefel, the "Beer Boot".  As much as you try to understand it, drinking from a smelly old boot would just make your beer taste funny.  The boys had a helping hand in the shape of a Glass Beer Boot!  Apparently as you get towards the bottom of the glass the air rushes into the toe area and the liquid comes straight down.

One day they skied the Hidden Valley.  The valley walls to the left are smaller and scattered with frozen waterfalls.  The run twists and turns for 7km, creating a mysterious, secret ambience.  At the bottom of the trail, you have the option of taking the horse drag, a great experience, where you hold on to ropes pulled by horses as they take you along the flat frozen river bed to the next lift.

And afterwards Phil enjoyed a Calimero.  An Italian coffee-based beverage that consists of a warm egg liqueur that is topped with an espresso shot and a generous dollop of whipped cream.  The drink is a spin on Bombardino - a classic Italian cocktail that is enjoyed as an apres-ski drink.

What a wonderful holiday.. People tend to be more relaxed and less stressed when bathed in scenic beauty outdoors.  Simply being active outdoors made me feel calmer and more relaxed.  Exercise releases endorphins in the brain, which makes us feel better.  This helps relieve stress.  When skiing, I find myself calming down because I can't think of much else.  I have to focus on my ski skills only.

Happy Birthday Jamie

Happy Birthday Jamie.

It doesn't seem like five minutes since you turned 8, and here we are a whole 365 days later blowing the candles out on your 9th birthday cake.

In many ways you've not changed all that much in the last 12 months.  You still love lego, and are never too far away from a computer game.  You're trying hard at school.  You're utterly charming and chatty, but most of all you are kind and thoughtful.  You also love playing football with Chloe and snooker with Daddy.

This is your last year in single digits, you're really going to start changing in all kinds of ways over the next few years.  I guess it won't be too long before you are taller than me.

As you blow out your candles, I hope all your wishes come true.  Happy Birthday

Christmas 2022

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

You snow the drill.  It's time to kick back and take a break to reconnect with loved ones, with lots of Christmas Events.........

Lunch with my Aqua Aerobics buddies.....

Festive Afternoon Tea at Chewton Glen, thank you Doug and Sofia......

We visited Exbury Garden this year and enjoyed a ride on the Festive Express railway.  Real-life elves greeted us and led the carol-singing as we steamed along. . Inside the engine shed Chloe met Father Christmas in his very special 'royal' train carriage.  Chloe also left a message on the Christmas wishing tree.

We enjoyed browsing the stalls at the Christmas market and, afterwards, a friendly elf supplied a cake for Chloe and Jamie to decorate.

Also time for a seasonal family trail running through Exbury's woodland gardens.  Such a beautifully festive day with frost.

We returned home to Milford on Sea, stopping to look at the Christmas decorations on the green.

The elves were busy playing a game when we walked in.

But it was time for Chloe and Jamie to watch their favourite game.  England in the World Cup.  Sadly the result wasn't the one they wanted.

The next morning the naughty Elves were hanging around.

Whilst Jamie and Chloe made festive pancakes.

We were lucky enough to be invited to Caroline's for Christmas.  So on Christmas Eve we took Jamie and Chloe to Kingston Lacy whilst Mummy prepped.  The house was fabulously decorated showcasing Christmas traditions from around the world.  Each room in the house represented a different story.  Colombia's Day of Little Candles in the Library, the tale behind the perennially popular carol 'Silent Night' in the Drawing Room, and the magical Legend of the Christmas Spider, an Eastern European folk tale popular in Ukraine in the Dining Room.  Two Ukrainian girls were in the Dining Room when we visited and they sang a Ukrainian carol for us.  The Spanish Room highlighted the story of the Three Kings, based on the Spanish Fiesta de los Reyes, and the staircase was decorated with shoes, explaining the Icelandic tradition of children putting shoes in their windows to receive sweets or rotting potatoes, depending on how well the child has behaved!)

Jamie and Chloe also made their own crackers for the Christmas Day dining table.

Well done a fantastic Roast Turkey dinner and "HO HO HO! A huge jolly thank for letting us win the occasional game.  We had a great time and lots of new memories were made.  Thank you for hosting Caroline and Mike.

Emmie wasn't performing in the Panto on Tuesday 27th so we all headed over the Alun and Gemma's for the day and what a fabulous day.  Gemma's amazing cooking skills made this meal a fabulous feast!   We are still talking about the delicious steak and wonderful pud.  Not to mention the Chocolate Block.  You and Alun are such gracious hosts.  Everyone had such a great time, especially bowling on the computer.

The Christmas celebrations and festivities are over, I've had my fill of mulled wine and carols.  It's time for bubbles and the New Year.

Happy New Year.  Wishing you health and happiness as we turn the page and usher in a brand new chapter.  Let's go......
