La Petite Ferme is at Franschoek Pass, Franschoek, South Africa
(00 27 21 876 3016).
There are few restaurants with such a magical location, an hour's drive from Cape Town.
Ambience and view
The restaurant is on a mountain pass with a spectacular view across forests, vineyards and orchards to the Huguenot town of Franschoek.
Decor
The terrace harmonises perfectly with the view.
Menu
Local trout is the speciality
with no bones
how do they do that?
and for dessert the wonderful South African dessert Don Pedro
It definitely is one of my favourite desserts of all time. This drink appears everywhere in South Africa and is ordered as a dessert. Call it a milkshake for adults. Totally Addictive Ambrosia.
Ingredients
450g soft vanilla ice cream
120 ml double cream. Instead of cream you can use milk (slimming tip!)
60 ml Kahlua, Whisky, Amarula, Baileys or Brandy. Mine was Kahlua, like Baileys. (Just one drink not all!)
Chocolate to garnish. This one is posh, I just use Cadbury's Flake on top.
Method
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and sprinkle the chocolate on top. Serve immediately with a straw.
Price
A mere £22 each for three courses with very friendly service, wonderful vistas and an excellent bottle of their own Sav. Blanc.
Oh yeah, and the food
The huge trout was simple, fresh and perfectly moist.
Also a magnificent Protea in the Ladies!!
On our way back to Somerset West we passed this wonderful cloud formation on the Hottentots Holland Mountains.
Then back to the UK and snow
